13-15 May 2008
Three day short course “Introduction to optical system design“
by Dr. Marie Cote
Short Course
In addition to the clear presentation of the basic optics concepts, this course includes
sessions of supervised optical design work with optical software and provides
opportunity to course participants to play with real lenses in an optical lab environment.
Objectives
- provide an introduction to basic optics concepts and help participants understand constraints and compromises inherent to optical system design development
- introduce the elements and limitations which determine the specifications of an
optical system
- define and explain tools that are used to evaluate the optical system's
performance
- help course participants prevent, minimize or account for possible problems by
asking the right questions in the early stage of system specifications
Intended audience
This course is intended for engineers, researchers, technicians and supervisors who
work in the optical imaging instruments conception. Knowledge of basic optics concepts
is an asset.
Instructor
Dr. Marie Cote is co-founder of Side by Side Optics Inc consulting house that
specializes in design and analysis of optical systems. She represents a new wave of
optical designers that received formal optics education at prestigious universities like
Laval, Quebec City and Optical Sciences Center, Tucson Arizona. She acquired vast
optical design experience at some of the finest photonics organisations like INO
(Quebec, Canada) and Breault Research Organization (Tucson,USA).
