Those packages are similar to fiber pigtailed LED package, except they have plug-in connector which allows to disconnect optical fiber from LED assembly which is required in some situations.

This novel micro-optic approach is well suited for coupling of two LEDs of different wavelength into the same multimode optical fibers. The coupling efficiency is dependent on diode type, fiber core diameter and its NA. It is also possible to combine a LED and a laser diode in the same package.

Applications : All kinds of illumination application, night vision and military in general, sensors, robotics, medical applications, industrial, telecom (fiber faults locators) etc.
